Noble County gets a little more winter

Kendallville is far enough north that it picks up more of the lake-effect tail than Fort Wayne does — more snow, and snow that stays longer. For a roof, the part that matters is still the freeze and thaw on either side of the cold: snow melts against a warm deck, refreezes at the cold eave, and backs water up. On asphalt that water only has to get past a nail head. On a mechanically seamed standing seam roof there is no horizontal seam and no exposed fastener for it to find.

What metal does not do is fix the attic. If heat is getting into your attic and melting the snow from underneath, a lifetime roof over it is half a job, and I will say so.

Lake houses and town houses

Noble County is lakes — cottages that became year-round homes, with decks and entries facing the water — and older houses in town with steeper pitches and additions, plus farm ground in between.

On the lake houses, two things: wind off open water, where a concealed-clip panel with no screw head exposed earns its cost, and sliding snow. Metal lets snow go all at once, and a roof plane's worth over a doorway or a deck is not a small event. Snow retention above anything you walk under belongs in the quote from the start.

On the older in-town houses, the job is flashing — valleys, sidewalls, chimneys — and the deck. An interlocking metal shingle fits those roofs where you want a traditional look at 3/12 or steeper; standing seam fits the long simple runs and the low-slope porch sections. The screw-down panel on the barn stays on the barn; we do not install it under 4/12 or, usually, on the house you plan to keep.

When I tell Kendallville homeowners not to do this

If you are selling in the next few years, good asphalt is the rational choice. If one flashing or one pipe boot is leaking on a sound roof, that is a repair — we do not take repair calls, and a repair contractor is the right answer. If the smallest number this year is the question, metal loses that comparison, and I would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Where we are coming from

Kendallville is about 35 minutes from our Fort Wayne office, and it is territory we are in regularly. Now you have the context to decide.

“We also serve surrounding towns and rural communities throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan within roughly a 90-minute drive of our Fort Wayne and Noblesville offices.”

What we put on roofs around here

Installs from our own jobs. Which system suits a house depends on its pitch and its details, not on the town.
