Why we install their products
We use Vicwest for one thing: their True Nature interlocking shingles, in two profiles — Cedar Creek Shake and North Ridge Slate. Nothing else in their catalog goes on our jobs. Not their standing seam profiles, not their exposed-fastener panels.
Why those two. True Nature locks on all four sides, the same idea as EDCO's shingle: the roof keeps water out at the surface instead of counting on the underlayment to catch it later. Vicwest roll-forms in Canada, and their documentation is written for snow load and freeze-thaw, which is what we have here.
Here is the tradeoff. It is 28-gauge steel, thinner than the 24-gauge we roll standing seam from, and an interlocking shingle wants 3/12 or steeper and a crew that has done it before. If you want the look of shake or slate, this is one honest way to get it. If you like the look of vertical seams, standing seam is the simpler answer.
