Cedar Creek Shake

Vicwest's True Nature four-side interlocking steel shake shingle, 28 gauge.

How I think about this one

The shake profile of Vicwest's True Nature line, and one of the two Vicwest products we install. The four-side lock is what I trust: the panel keeps water out at the surface rather than living on its underlayment. It is 28-gauge steel — read that beside the gauge on anything else you are quoted.

What it costs, and why

Installed, most Cedar Creek Shake roofs we put on land between $1,200–$1,650 per square. A square is 100 square feet of roof, and that figure includes tearing off one layer of shingles.

Where yours lands depends on the roof more than the product. A second layer to tear off, soft decking we only find once the old roof is open, a steep pitch, and a lot of valleys, dormers, chimneys and skylights all push it up. A simple, walkable roof with one layer sits near the low end.

This is a range, not a quote. I would not give you a real number without seeing the roof, and I would be careful with anyone who does. If the up-front number is the whole question, how a metal roof costs out over thirty years is the better place to start.

What Vicwest says about it

Traditional shake shingles have a tendency to warp, split, mold, and eventually rot. True Nature’s Cedar Creek Shake shingles provide all the aesthetic benefit of a shake roof without the degradation. Quadra-Loc technology securely locks the shingle on all four sides, ensuring exceptional water-tightness and nearly eliminating uplift caused by high winds and heavy rains. Additionally, the deep keyways channel water away from the roof effectively.
