Portage roofs are mostly simpler — the snow is not

Portage is largely postwar and later suburban housing — ranches, split-levels, and two-stories on hips and gables, sound framing, usually on their second or third asphalt roof. Those are straightforward metal installs. The weather is not: Portage sits in the lake-effect belt and gets heavy, wet snow all winter.

Wet snow sits on low-slope sections and melts and refreezes at the eave over and over. On asphalt that water only needs a nail head. On a mechanically seamed panel there is no fastener head or horizontal seam for it to find. Metal does not stop ice forming — the membrane at the eave and the attic ventilation do the real work — but it changes what the ice can get into.

Which system, on which house

On a simple gable or hip, standing seam formed on site to the full length of the run is the cleanest answer — no horizontal seams, concealed clips, nothing in the weather. If you want the roof to still read as shingles from the street, an interlocking metal shingle does that and wants a 3/12 pitch or better. The lake homes around Portage are where I think hardest about wind and sliding snow: a concealed-clip seam holds up on an open-water lot, and snow retention above a deck or a door belongs in the quote from the start.

Exposed fastener is right for a shed and wrong for a house here — the washers under the screws wear out around year ten to twelve, and with this much wet snow I do not want water relying on a washer. We do not install it below 4/12 anywhere.

Spring storms bring hail. Metal stays watertight after hail while sometimes showing cosmetic dents on a broad flat pan. A dent is not a leak, but if a flawless surface for thirty years is what you are picturing, adjust that picture now.

Who this is not for

Selling in a few years — asphalt. One failing detail on a sound roof — a repair contractor; we do not take repair calls. Wants shingles again — a different contractor.

The drive

Portage is about an hour and three quarters from our Fort Wayne office, at the far edge of where we work. We are licensed and in good standing in Michigan. A local crew is a legitimate thing to want. The roof does not change with the distance.

“We also serve surrounding towns and rural communities throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan within roughly a 90-minute drive of our Fort Wayne and Noblesville offices.”

What we put on roofs around here

Installs from our own jobs. Which system suits a house depends on its pitch and its details, not on the town.
