An older city with older roofs

Battle Creek has a lot of housing from the first half of the last century — two-story homes and bungalows with steep pitches, dormers, valleys, and chimneys, many on their third or fourth asphalt roof. On those, the deck is the first question. Plank decking with gaps is common on that vintage, and decking that has been wet at some point is common on any house that has been through a few ice-dam winters. Neither is a dealbreaker. Both are a line item, and they should appear on the quote before the tear-off, not after.

The failure point on these roofs is rarely the field. It is the valley, the sidewall, the chimney. A concealed-fastener system removes the nail heads that failed last time, and an interlocking metal shingle keeps the look of an older street. The flashing is the job.

Lake-effect snow, from the ladder

Calhoun County gets real lake-effect off Lake Michigan. Wet snow, a lot of it, and melt-and-refreeze at the eaves more often than on the Indiana side of our map. That is the ice-dam mechanism with more water in it. Metal gives backed-up water no fastener head or shingle edge to work under, but it does not make ice dams impossible and it does not fix a warm attic. Ventilation comes up constantly on older houses where an attic was finished without reworking the intake. Ask about it.

Low-slope additions are where wet snow sits. For those sections I use a mechanically seamed panel rated for that pitch, not a steeper-roof system stretched past its minimum.

The postwar neighborhoods are simpler — gables and hips on sound framing, usually on their second asphalt roof. Standing seam formed on site to the full length of the run fits them well.

Who should not be calling us

If you are selling in a few years, asphalt. If your roof has one bad detail on a sound field, that is a repair — we do not take repair calls, and a repair contractor is the honest answer. If you want shingles again, a different contractor.

The distance

Battle Creek is about an hour and three quarters from our Fort Wayne office, at the far edge of where we work. We are licensed and in good standing in Michigan. A crew from Kalamazoo or closer is a legitimate thing to want, and I will say so. The system and the transferable warranty are the same wherever we come from.

“We also serve surrounding towns and rural communities throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan within roughly a 90-minute drive of our Fort Wayne and Noblesville offices.”

What we put on roofs around here

Installs from our own jobs. Which system suits a house depends on its pitch and its details, not on the town.
