Winter sits a little longer up here

Montpelier is up in the northwest corner of Ohio, and it gets a bit more snow and a bit more cold than Fort Wayne does. The part that matters to a roof is the melt-and-refreeze on the edges of the season. Snow on the deck melts from house heat, runs down to the cold overhang, freezes, and backs water up under the roofing. On asphalt that water only has to find a nail. On a mechanically seamed metal panel there is no fastener head or horizontal seam for it to find.

Metal does not stop ice from forming. It changes what the ice can do. The membrane at the eave and the attic ventilation are what actually prevent the damage, and I would rather fix a warm attic than put a lifetime roof over one.

Village homes and farm ground

In town, Montpelier has older homes with the geometry that older homes have — steeper pitches, dormers, valleys, a porch added at a shallower slope. Those roofs need real flashing work, and the quote should be higher than a simple gable. A concealed-fastener system fits them: an interlocking metal shingle if you want the shingle look from the street, standing seam if you do not mind the vertical lines.

Outside town, farmsteads. The barn has screw-down panel on it already, and that is the right roof for a barn. The washer under every screw wears out around year ten to twelve, which you can live with on an outbuilding. On the house, I usually steer people to a concealed-fastener system instead. We will not install exposed fastener below a 4/12 pitch.

Metal sheds snow, and a roof plane letting go over a door is not a small event. Where an entry sits under a slope, snow retention belongs in the quote from the start.

Where metal is the wrong call

Selling in a few years — asphalt. One leaking detail on a sound roof — a repair contractor, not us; we do not take repair calls. Wants shingles again — a different contractor. Lowest number this year — asphalt wins that.

Coming from Fort Wayne

Montpelier is roughly an hour from our Fort Wayne office. Fort Wayne is home; this corner of Ohio is a regular drive for us. If a crew down the road matters more, there are good ones. The system, the certification, and the warranty that transfers with the house do not change with the distance.

“We also serve surrounding towns and rural communities throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan within roughly a 90-minute drive of our Fort Wayne and Noblesville offices.”

What we put on roofs around here

Installs from our own jobs. Which system suits a house depends on its pitch and its details, not on the town.

  • Slate-profile metal shingle roof on a stone home with dormers
  • Gray stone-coated steel roof on a brick ranch home, aerial view
  • Green standing seam metal roof on a log home with attached garage
