Edgerton, from the road in

Edgerton is a small village close enough to the Indiana line that what we know from Fort Wayne applies directly. Flat farm ground, wind with nothing to slow it down, winters that freeze and thaw rather than stay frozen. The roofs are older homes in the village, some postwar ranches, and farmsteads with a house and a barn.

Barn metal and house metal are not the same thing

The first thing most people around here want to know is whether I mean the same panel that is on the machine shed. That is an exposed-fastener system. It is real metal, we install a version of it, and on a shed it is the right roof. Here is the tradeoff: every screw goes through the face of the panel, sealed by a rubber washer, and the washers wear out around year ten to twelve. That is a maintenance pass on an outbuilding. On the house you plan to keep, it is the reason a fifty-year roof leaks in year fifteen.

House systems hold the panel differently. Concealed clips and locked seams keep every fastener out of the weather. A mechanically seamed standing seam roof, formed on site to the full length of the run, is what I trust most. An interlocking metal shingle reads as a shingle roof from the curb and wants a 3/12 pitch or better. We do not install exposed fastener below 4/12 on any building.

On an open lot the west slope of an asphalt roof ages faster than the east one — tabs lift, reseal poorly, lift again. Metal has no tab to catch, and on standing seam the wind load is carried by clips under the seam, not by washers.

When I would tell you not to

If you are selling in the next few years, put the money in good asphalt and keep the difference. If your roof has one failing flashing or boot and the rest is sound, that is a repair, and we do not take repair calls — a repair contractor is the right answer. If you want shingles again, we are the wrong contractor and will say so.

Where we are coming from

Edgerton is about 50 minutes from our Fort Wayne office. Ohio is not our home market, and a closer contractor is a legitimate thing to want. What we bring is metal only, certified crews, and a warranty that transfers if you sell.

“We also serve surrounding towns and rural communities throughout Northeast Indiana, Northwest Ohio, and Southern Michigan within roughly a 90-minute drive of our Fort Wayne and Noblesville offices.”

What we put on roofs around here

Installs from our own jobs. Which system suits a house depends on its pitch and its details, not on the town.
